Job Objective : Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) or designee, the Director of Inpatient Services is responsible for the leadership and organization of the nursing departments and product lines as assigned by the CNO, including nursing practice throughout the hospital.
Accountability: Fully accountable for the operational functions of assigned departments including, but not limited to, recruiting, selection, evaluation, promotion, budgeting, programs, policies, and planning.
Fully accountable for assigned departments' adherence to hospital-wide policies, regulations imposed by regulatory and accrediting agencies, and public relations image.
Accountable for all accrediting and licensing of assigned departments.
Duties and Responsibilities: A.
Leadership and Management Provides leadership to continually improve areas of responsibility and to ensure interdependence with all divisions.
Coordinates the activities of assigned departments with other departments and the general public.
Assists in developing and implementing departmental goals and objectives with input from staff members.
Organizes, coordinates and controls activities integrated into the strategic plan.
Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services and enhance team achievements and overall organizational performance.
May chair standing committees as assigned.
Develops and leads committees as appropriate.
Interacts with all customers to ensure prompt and accurate communication as needed to provide the service expected and to meet the goals of the service.
Represents Nursing on various committees.
Serves as a liaison to the Medical Staff and represents Nursing on Medical Staff committees, including the Medical Executive Committee.
Evaluates problems, and develops and implements solutions.
Evaluates performance of assigned departments, and of key management personnel.
Expects that assigned departments and directors will achieve results using team efforts.
Acts as an administrative representative when needed.
Develops new ideas and/or systems with innovation and creativity.
Challenges the status quo in looking for more efficient practices.
Leads by example and serves as a professional role model.
Maintains appropriate visibility with Medical Staff, employees and community.
Updates employees on present as well as future changes.

B.
Plan of Nursing Care and Nursing Practice Facilitates the development and implementation of the plan of nursing care to achieve the vision for nursing practice.
Ensures that the outcomes of the strategic goals for nursing practice are achieved.
Ensures that the plan of nursing care is considered during the decision-making process in collaboration with representatives from the executive team, the Medical Staff, and the Board of Directors.
Ensures that the plan of nursing care is consistent with the mission and philosophy of the hospital and supports the goals of the hospital.
Ensures that nursing practice with the hospital conforms to the laws and regulations governing the practice of professional nursing within the State of California, including those regulations set forth by the Department of Public Health, General Acute Care Hospitals (Title 22).
C.
Human Resources Management Conforms with Affirmative Action guidelines.

Ensures that staff is in compliance with licensure and other annually mandated requirements.

Quality Improvement and Clinical Safety Personally leads quality improvement teams to improve systems for higher efficiency and better customer service.
Ensures that the nursing standards of the Joint Commission are met.
Ensures that the use of resources is effective and supports positive outcomes for customers as demonstrated through the nursing quality monitoring and improvement process.
E.
Financial Resources Management Develops and recommends department operating and capital budgets.
Assists in establishing budgets for assigned departments.
Monitors revenues and expenditures against established budgets.
Ensures that department operates within established budget.
Prepares and manages FTE budget, including developing staffing plans and managing monthly and daily staff schedules.
Accountable for unit productivity.
Develops and utilizes the budget as a planning and control tool.
Develops departmental strategic objectives and new programs.
F.
Information Systems Management Understands departmental information systems and other equipment as necessary.
Understands advanced aspects of various information systems.
Understands and conforms to the hospital Information Technology Solutions Group strategic plan.
G.
Competence Maintains an appropriate level of professional competence by ongoing development of knowledge and skills.
Performs professional duties in accordance with relevant laws, regulations and technical standards.
Prepares complete, clear reports and recommendation after appropriate analyses of relevant and reliable information.
H.
Confidentiality Refrains from disclosing confidential information acquired in the course of work, except when authorized and unless legally obligated to do so.
Informs subordinates, as appropriate, regarding the confidentiality of information acquired in the course of their work and monitors their activities to assure the maintenance of confidential information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge Knowledge of the advanced principles of nursing management and administration, as generally acquired by a master's degree in nursing or a related field with at least one year of experience in administration; or a baccalaureate degree in nursing or a related field with at least two years of experience in nursing administration; or at least four years of experience in nursing administration or supervision, with evidence of continuing education directly related to the job specifications.
Knowledge of standards, laws, regulations, and statutes governing the operations and management of local health care districts.
