DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Dean of Mathematics Sciences, and Engineering Division, the Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Antelope Valley College Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) program.
Director responsibilities include strategic planning, program development, and implementation of activities aimed at promoting STEM education and increasing diversity in these fields.
The Director is responsible for setting program goals, creating, and managing budgets, and ensuring efficient resource allocation.
They will collaborate with educators, students, and other stakeholders to design and deliver equitable and effective academic support services, mentorship, and extracurricular opportunities.
Additionally, the Director will serve as an advocate for underrepresented students in STEM, working to secure funding, build community partnerships, and foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES E – indicates essential duties of the position Meets regularly with the responsible administrator, faculty, and statewide community college director to plan implementation of the MESA program at Antelope Valley College and report on progress of the program.
(E) Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships between Academic Affairs, Student Services, and the statewide MESA program director and other community agencies and maintains open and regular communications with all program stakeholders.
(E) Consults with faculty, teaching assistants, and administrators of support services to assist in the intentional and culturally relevant delivery of services to students.
Maintains contact with MESA participants through personal discussions, regular meetings, and other activities.
Maintains regular contact with Instructional Office, deans, and faculty members to promote an understanding of MESA services, and to build a program of academic rigor.
Evaluates student needs, external requirements and regulations, and current trends to develop program modifications and improvements; monitors and assess program activities for equitable access and success, culturally relevant educational effectiveness, and operation efficiency.
(E) Collects and compiles data and prepare status reports as required by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) and participate in campus activities that lead to the collection and submission of MESA participant data for the CCCCO Management Information System.
Prepares and manages budgets; monitors and approves expenditures; prepares grant and program fund applications and ensures compliance with requirements; may prepare and manage contracts for services within the program area as well as prepare mid-year and annual programmatic and financial reports of MESA generated funds.
(E) Conducts outreach and recruitment efforts for MESA students and facilitators.
(E) Maintains longitudinal files on each MESA student tracking student’s progress before and after transfer.
(E) Plans, supervises, directs, implements, assesses, evaluates, and implements the MESA program activities to ensure that the program’s goals, objectives, and timelines are met and are in alignment with grant requirements, and District priorities and objectives, ensuring equitable access, retention, and success for students.
(E) Reviews all applications for admissions to the MESA Program, conducts interviews of selected individuals, and conducts orientations for program candidates.
(E) Provides training and work direction to student assistants, hourly personnel and others as assigned; participates as requested in hiring personnel and provides input regarding performance evaluations.
(E) Directs and participates in the provision of services at all college sites to math and science students including academic and educational workshops, speakers, academic advising, scholarships and fellowships, campus visits, planned activities, and retention strategies.
(E) Maintains contacts and encourages the formation of a pipeline and pathway for students between MESA and four-year colleges and universities.
Coordinates the preparation and editing of a wide variety of documents, including correspondence, reports, surveys, forms, charts, and other documents.
Collaborates with District and external agencies to assess data toward eradicating disproportionate impacts.
(E) Organizes meetings as appropriate and attends meetings appropriate to assigned projects.
(E) Manages inventory of equipment and supplies for assigned projects.
(E) Works with the local campus staff and/or regional MESA colleagues in order to research and prepare grant proposals for collaborative submissions.
Maintains a variety of records including those of a sensitive and confidential nature.
(E) Operates with a continuous quality improvement mindset and works with faculty and other campus areas to identify needs, coordinate services to students, and improve program utilization.
(E) Participates in the MESA Regional Alliance and District committees.
(E) Supervises program personnel.
(E) Performs other duties as assigned.
(E) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years of work experience as a project director/coordinator/manager in similar local, state, or federal programs or two (2) years of work experience in education, industry, or other profession involving work with postsecondary students in mathematics-based fields.
Preferred qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in a STEM area, Education, or in a discipline that includes critical-thinking skills.
