gov/Help/working-in-government/benefits/ Responsibilities: Nurse Practitioner Responsibilities: The incumbent supports the Navy Occupational Safety and Health (NAVOSH) Program objective of ensuring a safe and healthful work environment for all Navy service members and employees.
Incumbent maintains the medical examination program under the supervision of an Occupational Medicine Physician.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to: The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and implementation of treatment plans.
Referrals are made when the scope of the diagnosis and treatment is beyond the realm of standardized medical protocols or safe practices.
In an emergency, the incumbent will ensure that EMS is activated and that appropriate care is transferred to local network provider.
For minor injuries, first aid or palliative treatment must be given.
Provides primary care for illness occurring in the workplace including assessment, diagnosis and implementation of treatment plan.
Additionally provides evaluation to those employees returning from sick leave.
For non-occupational injuries, treatment is given enabling the employee to complete his current work shift before consulting with his/her private physician.
Management of industrial injuries and illnesses: -Is aware of Dept Of Labor's Injury Compensation Programs that fall under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA) or the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation ACT (LHWCA) as appropriate.
-Planning with the employee recommending referral to the appropriate level of care.
-Works closely with Human Resources and supervisors in determining modified duty assignments.
-Communicates with health care providers and Human Resources regarding return to work Issues.
-Regular contact and reassessment of injury and ability to work until returned to regular duty.
-Works closely with the Occupational Medicine Physician to determine the best course of care and work ability.
The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner has a primary responsibility to conduct the physical examinations done in the Occupational Health Department.
Routine responsibilities include, but are not limited to: -Taking occupational, medical and family histories.
Relevant background data is considered.
-Performs specialized health screening procedures such as pulmonary function tests, audiograms, visual screens, and electrocardiograms.
Interprets the results and how deviations from normal affect health and employability.
-Initiates appropriate lab tests and x-rays.
Examples of tests include blood for heavy metals, pseudocholinesterase, etc.
Evaluates tests to determine if additional tests or referrals are indicated.
Participates in preventive health education programs, in-service training and counseling aimed at prevention of disease and health maintenance: Performs pre-placement evaluations and establishes baseline levels for newly hired civilian employees.
The evaluation can include the prevention of occupational injuries and illnesses such as the detection of pre-existing conditions that might be aggravated by a particular assignment and to determine whether the individual is physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of performing a particular job or assignment with an acceptable degree of efficiency and without endangering their own health and safety or that of their fellow employees.
Evaluates individuals with disabilities to determine if they can perform the essential job functions and makes recommendation for reasonable accommodations.
Designs and conducts a comprehensive program of occupational medical surveillance examinations based on the real and potential health hazards encountered in the workplace.
Performs evaluations on individuals: who have been absent from the workplace for a specified period of time due to illness, injury, or other reasons; for temporary or permanent reassignment; and for a variety of other reasons to ensure they are physically and or emotionally fit for duty.
Performs evaluations and provides medical preparations for employees traveling to other parts of the world.
Performs physical examination evaluations and laboratory tests appropriate to the various occupational exposures encountered by employees; treating job-related injuries and illnesses of the employees, and prescribes further care and treatment as appropriate.
Provides first aid or one-time palliative treatment to civilian employees who require medical attention during duty hours, which is beyond the scope of the normal delegated authority of the nursing staff.
Advise employees of additional medical attention needed.
Provides treatment for minor injuries or refers injured person to appropriate medical treatment facility or private health care provider.
Assists the Occupational Health Physician as consultant to the supported activity commanders and staff, advising on medical, occupational health, Industrial hygiene matters.
The nurse practitioner may be required to perform primary care medical functions within the general medical primary care clinic in a manner consistent with medical abilities.
Makes decisions concerning medical care needs of patients with independently, and in collaboration with physicians.
Identifies and manages specific illnesses.
Gives direct psychological nursing care in the presence of illness or disability in order to maintain life, provide comfort, reduce distress, and enhance coping ability.
Works collaboratively with the physician in management of selected complex medical problems.
Provides the full range of emergency services or crisis intervention in the absence of the physician, including life saving emergency procedures in order to stabilize a patient sufficiently to transport to a hospital facility.
Evaluates the nursing and medical aspects of care plans periodically, recognizing the need for reassessment by a physician or other health professionals.
Participates with consulting physicians in planning, instituting, evaluating and revising the program plan; assists in determining conditions, resources, and policies essential to delivery of health care services.
Participates in and conducts studies relevant to health care and nursing needs of patients.
Serves in a teaching capacity in the development of other health care workers.
Monitors for, and where appropriate, intervenes in population health trends in a manner consistent with the tenets of military preventive medicine.
May serve as intermediate supervisor for the Audio Technician and Occupational Health Nurse during the absence of Officer in Charge (OIC).
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises and coordinates the work of those assigned to the Branch Health Clinic, Occupational Health unit, including an Occupational Health Nurse, and Audio Health Technician, a Medical Records Clerk, and the Preventive Medicine Department.
Review work methods and schedules resources to provide the maximum service efficiently and economically.
Assigns work to employees based on selective consideration of difficulty of work and capabilities of employees.
Establishes the performance standards, ensures accuracy of the job description, approves leave, maintains a continuous on-the-job training program and administers discipline to subordinates.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Must be a US Citizen Professional Nursing Experience: At least one year of Occupational Health and/or Preventative Medicine experience required.
(Experience in Public Health is also preferred, but not required.
) Degree: A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in Nurse Practitioner is required.
This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.
S.
Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School.
Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted APN license from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Licensure: A current certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a national certifying organization, (i.
